Film Opening Brainstorming
Rise
I really enjoyed this film opening. The beat of the music went along with the different cuts and actions of the person in the film. I also liked how the title of the film was displayed largely across the screen. The fact that the music got louder when the camera was pointed towards the soccer player who was wearing headphones is also a cool concept.

I did not enjoy this film opening. I thought it was quite cheesy. The way the shots were cut did not seem very clean, and the music didn't go along with what was happening. The classical music in a horror movie typically happens when something creepy is going on. For example, when the camera focuses on a doll, or a haunted object. I do like how the title of the film was typed out though. That looked pretty cool.
Dear Lover
This opening was also pretty cheesy and wasn't filmed well. The girl who was speaking did not seem very invested in the story of the film. However, I like how the screen initially went black when she started speaking. I see that often in big movie productions.
Dare to Thrill
I loved this film opening! Everything from the angles to the quality of the shots was perfect. It felt like I was watching a real movie. I especially enjoyed the angles that were shot when the group of friends were turning on the car. Shooting the headlights and the driver turning the music volume all the way up was a great idea.
Always Watching
I did not enjoy this film opening either. It was cheesy. The quality of the camera and the lighting was poor, and you could tell the actor was not invested in the story. I do like how they included flashbacks though. After the patient said something to his therapist, a flashback would pop up of him with the friend he was discussing in therapy.
The Blue Boar
The camera angles in this opening were excellent. My favorite parts were when the mother was talking and the camera focused only on her mouth and when the girl's reaction was shown by shooting only her face. It's also pretty cool how it had a musical, disney princess feel. The girl strolled off into the forest singing.
White Coats
This was one of the higher quality film openings. The music went well with the story, the lighting was perfect, and so were the angles. This is a horror movie, so I like how they kept the suspense up.
Stalker
I hated this film opening. It was extremely awkward due to the fact that there was no music. There was only diegetic sound. In addition, the girl waking up to her phone alarm in the very first shot was cheesy and shot from a very poor angle.
Nostalgia
This was strange. I understand the concept the creators of this film opening were trying to convey, but without the title "Nostalgia," I would be very confused and uninterested in this film.
Lost and Found
This opening was pretty cool as well. The camera quality was great. However, I don't like how the music switched so suddenly at the beginning. It was not very smooth or professional.
Summary:
These brainstorming sessions confirmed that I definitely need to have music throughout the majority of my film opening. The parts where the weren't any music in the openings I watched were so awkward and lowered my interest in the plot because I was so turned off. I also learned that the way in which you display the title is very important, and when.
